What the Marijuana Plants Need During the Vegetative Period

The vegetative growth of marijuana plants can take as little as 2 weeks and usually can run from 4 to 6 weeks and on their vegging period, they will tend to produce green leaves and healthy roots and stems using the nutrients, light, water and carbon dioxide supplied to them. When the weed plants are receiving an adequate amount of these elements, you can expect them to grow healthy and produce a bigger yield.

Our list only provides the basic information about the needs of your weed plants thus if you need to have a complete guide, you can check out the Growing Elite Marijuana Book for a complete how to grow weed guide.

Light Requirements

During the fast vegetative growth, marijuana plants need a lot of blue spectrum of light in a range of 6,500 Kelvin. When you are growing indoors, blue spectrum light is sourced from daylight light bulbs. The source of light for your cannabis plants is not a problem if you are growing outdoors because you have the sunlight as the natural source of light. Site selection is crucial because you need to choose a garden site where the plants can receive as much sunlight needed. Plants need to receive at least 3 ½ hours of direct sunlight every day (preferably the morning light). Plants receiving more than 8 hours of sunlight in a day will give better results.

In growing outdoors, the growth cycle of the weed plants is also dependent on the color spectrum from the sun and the length of the day. When plants receive an intense amount of natural sunlight, they can even grow up to more than 10 feet tall.

Water Requirements

Water is one of the basic requirements of growing marijuana either indoors or outdoors. When growing pot outdoors, look for a site where there is a water source nearby. To ensure an adequate supply of water, you can get buckets to be filled with water. Just make sure to hide them in a safe place. If the soil is already dry to touch, it is telling you that you need to water your plants. Water your cannabis plants every other day but do not overdo it because overwatering can cause the leaves to curl down. Also, the pH of the water should be around 6.0 to 7.0.

Nutrient Requirements

Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium which are usually found in fertilizer labels as NPK are the three main nutrients needed for marijuana’s growth. In the vegetative stage, the plants will require high levels of nitrogen to promote the healthy and strong growth of the leaves, roots, and stems. Micronutrients are also necessary during this stage such as sulfur, magnesium, iron, manganese, copper, calcium and zinc. These microelements can help maintain plant photosynthesis and to promote the overall growth of the plants.
