As we all might know by now, cannabis has been with us for centuries and it continues to offer incredible health and wellness benefits. While the traditional way of consuming cannabis is still widely popular, over the past decade, several other marijuana-based products are gaining more traction. This psychoactive plant has been seeped into tea, baked into recipes, extracted into oils, and stuffed into capsules. The latest trend of cannabis-infused products that are becoming more and more prominent by the day is marijuana lotion. Here are some benefits of this newly discovered product:

Delivers the same therapeutic effects without the cerebral high

Cannabis-infused lotions have been received widely all over the world because they offer several advantages over other cannabis products. These are easy products to carry around, very portable, and can provide immediate relief to users. They are also able to deliver powerful effects but without the head high, which may be unpleasant to many people. That being said, marijuana lotions are a good daytime alternative to enjoying cannabis.

Easy, simple, and safe to use

Marijuana lotions are just that – they are lotions. To enjoy their benefits, you simply need to smear them on your body just like any other topical. This removes the complexity that comes along with smoking, vaping, and dabbing. It also removes the risk of overdosing associated with smoking or eating weed. Lotions are considered to be the safest method of ingesting marijuana since topicals work by providing the cells where the lotion is applied with beneficial cannabinoids. Thus, they are generally used for localized pain relief, inflammation, soreness, and more.

How to Make DIY Marijuana Lotion

To process of making cannabis lotions is very similar to that of cannabis-infused butter or cannabutter. Our DIY process will combine two recipes to produce a simple yet highly effective cannabis lotion. The first step is to create basic cannabis salve or foundation oil and then use that to create your final cannabis-infused lotion.

Before we jump right into the process, it is important to select the right bud depending on what effects you are trying to achieve. If you are looking to treat burns, skin infections, or chronic pain, it is best to ask your local dispensary for advice on which strain to use.

Making a basic cannabis balm

We recommend using seven to 10 grams of decarboxylated cannabis. It is important to always work with decarboxylated weed to ensure that the THC content in your products has been activated. You can use the leaves of the plant as well as the buds. Other ingredients you will need include the following:

  • 1½ cup of coconut oil
  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ½ cup beeswax
  • 1 baking tray
  • 1 double boiler or saucepan
  • 1 jar and cheesecloth
  • The essential oil of your choice
  • Containers

Use the double boiler to melt your coconut oil and olive oil over low heat and stir continuously. Mix in your decarboxylated cannabis with the melted oils and continue to stir. Keep the heat on low for at least 20 to 25 minutes until the entire mixture has blended. It is very important to keep the flame at this level to avoid burning off the THC of your buds and decreasing their potency levels. It is also good to point out that olive oil has a lower smoke point than other oils and will burn easily.

After 25 minutes, remove the boiler or saucepan from the heat and gently strain the mixture through the cheesecloth and into a glass jar. Set aside to cool.

Go back to the same boiler or saucepan and, this time, heat the beeswax until it is melted. You can also opt to use organic soy wax or shea and cocoa butter. Once the beeswax has melted, add in the cannabis-infused oil. Feel free to add other ingredients such as essential oils to your mix. If you want a lotion that will help you relax, tea leaves, chamomile oil, and rose petals will be the perfect options. A few drops will do.

Once all the ingredients have been mixed, you can remove them from the heat and slowly transfer them into dark-colored containers. Make sure to store your basic cannabis salve in a cool, dark place as light can easily degrade the cannabinoids.

Making a cannabis-infused lotion

To turn your basic balm into a marijuana lotion, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 1 cup aloe vera gel
  • 2 tablespoons of creamy butter (shea or cocoa butter)
  • 1 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil

If you find the mixture too runny, increase the amount of beeswax in the mix. Otherwise, if you want to increase the fluidity of your salve, simply add more olive oil or Vitamin E oil. Keep in mind that unlike regular lotions, marijuana lotions will be too thick to be stored in a lotion pump. Instead, keep them stored in your dark-colored containers and in a cool, dark place to help preserve their longevity.

There you have it. You now have your DIY marijuana lotion. Just rub the topical on the affected area, sit back, and wait for the cannabinoids to work their wonders.

A marijuana lotion is one of the most prominent trends that has emerged recently from the world of cannabis. They are used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, treat burns, induce sleep, and many more. They are a safe and effective way to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the cannabis plant without getting high. Our DIY recipe above is simple and very easy to make.
